TSJC/NRA Summer

Gunsmithing, Law Enforcement and Armorer Schools

School Information

The TSJC/NRA Summer courses are designed for those interested in learning gunsmithing as a hobby or vocation, and for the professional gunsmith who wishes to use this opportunity to study new techniques and information.  Courses are organized for persons interested in gun related subjects for technical information as well as relaxation and enjoyment.

Classes are conducted Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  An NRA certificate is awarded for each course completed.

It is recommended that students bring their own tools and/or firearms.  A list of tools needed will be provided upon confirmation of enrollment.  Those wishing to complete projects using their personal firearms must purchase their own supplies.  All participants must comply with all local, federal and state firearm laws.  All persons enrolled in actual gunsmithing, law enforcement and/or armorer courses must be able to legally own and possess firearms.

Thursday Night Trap Shooting

After the certificate award ceremony, join us in trap shooting under the lights at Prator Range.  Seminar participants and families are invited to use the range facilities at member rates.

TSJC Gunsmithing A.A.S. Degree and Certificate Programs

Trinidad State Junior College is home to America’s premier gunsmithing school.  We have been providing quality education for gunsmiths since 1947.  Our two-year Gunsmithing Degree Program is designed to train individuals in the basic concepts and skills needed by the professional gunsmith.  Course work at the basic and advanced level includes bench metal, machine operations, gun repair and stockmaking.  A wide variety of specialized courses such as checkering, custom rifle, gun bluing, tool making and custom pistolsmithing are also offered.

TSJC gunsmithing students (men and women), ranging in age from 18 to 70, come from all over the world to study under knowledgeable gunsmiths whose backgrounds, experience and expertise are wide and varied.  The TSJC Gunsmithing Department is housed on two floors of the Mullen Mechanical Arts Building.  There are four primary shops plus a tool room and a bluing room that are dedicated to gunsmithing.  The machine shops are equipped with 30 lathes and 16 milling machines plus a CNC mill, along with a variety of grinders, buffers, surface grinders, heat treating ovens and wood working tools.

Although TSJC is affiliated with the National Rifle Association, the NRA is not an accreditation agency.  Trinidad State Junior College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

TSJC Gun Repair Certificate Program

The Gun Repair Program is designed as a concentrated two-semester certificate program oriented specifically toward the repair and maintenance of modern firearms.  Students are accepted into this program after receiving an Associate of Applied Science Degree or Certificate in Gunsmithing, or with appropriate training and/or work experience.  An elective co-op course is also available which enables the student to gain practical experience in the gunsmithing industry while completing program requirements.
