History of Gunsmithing at TSJC Founded in 1925, Trinidad State Junior College is the oldest junior college in Colorado. The college is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Gunsmithing Program is one of many occupational degree and certification programs offered by TSJC. The Gunsmithing program at Trinidad State Junior College (TSJC) celebrated its 50th Anniversary in the summer of 1997. Over 200 former students and instructors attended this 3 day event to recognize the history of the program and to renew old friendships and make new ones. Shortly after World War II, P.O. Ackley, one of the country's outstanding gunsmiths, was operating a gun shop in Trinidad, Colorado. He was contacted by large numbers of returning GIs from around the country about giving them training in the trade of Gunsmithing. Ackley was unable to meet the need for this type of training in his own shop, so he contacted the administration at Trinidad Junior College for help in setting up a gunsmithing training program at the College. In January of 1947, twelve students enrolled in the gunsmithing courses, with P.O. Ackley as the instructor. The TSJC Gunsmithing program has since grown to become nationally, indeed internationally, known as the premier Gunsmithing School in the United States. In June of 1978, TSJC began a long and beneficial relationship with the National Rifle Association by being designated as a NRA Affiliated Gunsmithing School. TSJC offers a series of short term, intensive, gunsmithing courses in May, June and July for those who have a limited time to pursue vocational interests or professional skill upgrading. This school has also enjoyed steady progress since it's inception. If you have an interest in gunsmithing, come to Trinidad and become a part of a long, outstanding history of accomplishment in this field. Enroll in a one week NRA Gunsmithing Schools course, or take on a Certificate program, or go all the way with an Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) from the first degree granting gunsmithing school in the country, (and the best!).
